the Lisbon Girl's Bedrooms
I'm sure if there's something that gets name-dropped the most in this community, it's Sofia Coppola and the girls in her films.
But, ignoring that, the clothes, the music, and all of the other wonderful things in her films, I decided to focus on the sets, and in particular, the bedrooms of the five Lisbon sisters in The Virgin Suicides.

To me, it is so utterly feminine, teenage, girly. The collections of knick-knacks, the posters plastering the walls, the various textures. Ever since I saw the film almost 10 years ago (wow, it's been that long!) I became obsessed with collecting vintage perfume bottles, animal figurines, paper lanterns, half-melted candles, and Catholic memorabilia.

And so, here's my little ode to those dirty, war-zone esque, but still ever-so-lovely Lisbon girl bedrooms.

EDIT: None of these photos are mine, they're all stills from the Virgin Suicides, just in case anyone was confused . . .

Beautiful! I'm a collector of Catholic Memorabilia, too. Where did you find the glowing Virgin Mary?

I think that's a film still, not her actual room.

I have that light up Mary statue and that's the first time I've ever seen it anywhere besides my room.

The movie was filmed in '99, but didn't come out until the following year. Don't make me feel that old! :) It's only been seven years in April ;)
I remember thinking I was super cool because I had the same rainbow sweater hoodie, I think I got it from Dehlia's.

I always loved that room. You can see so much of Sophias love for beautiful things- (also notable in Marie Antoinette) So feminine and pretty! Great post!

Gah, those scenes where they're lying around the bedroom after they're no longer allowed out are so sad.
And Lux burning her records. 'Not Aerosmith!!!'
I always loved the shots of the little knick knacks, the crossed on their walls and the sugar crystals they're growing.

I agree. The sets in this film are fantastic, and say so much about the story and characters.
Something oddly comforting about the way it looks too.
nice post.

i lovee this movie, and the room is amazing!

the movie changed me. i even quoted trip fontaine in an entry dated 26 april 07 in my journal.

"She was the stillpoint of the turning world, man. I never got over that girl, never. I mean, you know, I've loved a lot of ladies, but not like that. That was real," - Trip Fontaine

This is my favourite Sophia film. I found her others were visually stunning, but I couldn't get into the stories. This one is just perfect though.

BTW, did you get these from the film stills community?
thunderclap newman: bloodhannahkarina on January 31st, 2008 05:22 am (UTC)
Nope, just googled "Virgin Suicides screencaps" and they came up within the first few results.

I extra love the room because of my lame interest in astrology. Notice the zodiac symbols hanging near the desk. Aha.

I share a lame interest in astrology too, I want Cecilia's zodiac mobile. :*(

Hahha your icon. Beautiful.

Yeah. I can so easily imagine spending time in their bedrooms with all the knick-knacks and everything to look at. So good.
thunderclap newman: bloodhannahkarina on January 31st, 2008 06:58 am (UTC)
Seriously, I spend about 99% of my time in my bedroom, so I hope to one day make mine as girly and kitschy as theirs.
