these are such self-centered ideas
but it's sweet that you scanned all that so thanks on that behalf
b.pocketsjemstarr on September 22nd, 2007 06:16 pm (UTC)
how are they self-centered? i'm not trying to start something here. i am just curious. i haven't read the whole thing yet but there are some good thoughts here. like the one about the baby learning not to touch the hot stove from awareness and not fear. he's just showing a different way of thinking. like i said, i'm just curious in your reasoning.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 22nd, 2007 06:52 pm (UTC)
i would agree that they are self-centered ideas, but i think they are self-centered in a good way. meaning they have you think about everything you do, but in a way that reflects on how everyone acts. besides that, i think being self-centered is a good thing. (obviously people can take that to a bad extreme, but that could be said about everything and anything) i don't really understand why people think it is good not to be self-centered. we are living, and we should be living for ourselves. plus, i think every act is a self-centered one to begin with.

i love discussing things like these, so i hope you do to! i would love to hear a response. and you're welcoming for scanning it.

Meh. Its watered down Nieztsche with a liberal dose of new age bullshit. I find it pretty irritatating, but nice of you to scan it anyways.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 24th, 2007 04:59 am (UTC)
do you like Nietzsche?

Julianneeggsandtoast on September 24th, 2007 05:01 am (UTC)
lol. i think it was written like that to slow the reader down and think about each thought separately. at least that's how it made me feel when i read it...
acoyfish on September 23rd, 2007 10:18 pm (UTC)
I couldn't stomach it, I felt ridiculous reading it, however thank you for the scans.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 24th, 2007 05:02 am (UTC)
yeah, it's not for everyone. you're welcome.
Juliarestingstate on September 24th, 2007 01:03 am (UTC)
I read the whole thing in less than half an hour. To me, it's a long, mostly empty book. All of the ideas are opinions, most are redundant, some are contradictory, none matter. It's a book that is supposed to bring you to peace, but that isn't something that can be explained. You are who you are.

Page 8: We may all be islands but we are not cut off from each other because islands do not float in the ocean. They are all connected under the water eventually.

Page 45: "Don't do anything you don't have to do." No one has to do anything, but that doesn't mean no one should do anything at all.

Page 110: There are more options than either beating something or joining it. You could always just let it go and not involve it in your life. This is one of the ideas that later contradicts itself.

But thanks either way for scanning it.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 24th, 2007 05:08 am (UTC)
...aren't all ideas opinions? i know this book isn't for everyone, but for those that connect with it, i do think it helps a lot. i don't really understand your comment about pg 8 because that is what he is saying. & you're welcome, thanks for reading it.
Juliarestingstate on September 25th, 2007 11:32 pm (UTC)
I think the writer just rambles too much and doesn't get to the point fast enough. I just don't find it to be interesting because I don't find it to be written well, that's all. He should have not spaced it out so much. That's just how I feel though, and I have nothing against people who may have been helped by reading it :)

P.S. You might like Be Here Now by Ram Dass.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 25th, 2007 11:39 pm (UTC)
ah, yeah I see what you are saying.
I'll check that book out, thanks
Hardly Artold_fart_1 on September 24th, 2007 04:51 am (UTC)
it reminds me of kafka's The Zurau Aphorisms. but less. mostly because it's accepted that most of kafka's aphorisms are nonsensical so he isn't i guess claiming to know more than the rest of us, i think that makes it more truthful. this book just seems like it doesn't have that truth.
Julianneeggsandtoast on September 24th, 2007 05:08 am (UTC)
maybe i should read some kafka?
Hardly Artold_fart_1 on September 24th, 2007 05:12 am (UTC)
well yeah, lol. but i would read his short stories before aphorisms which he wrote/compiled when he was old and dying.
