i'm bored of it!
i'm really looking to mix gothy romanticism with mod babydoll, if that makes any sense. so, questions!
1. when/how did you discover your personal style?
2. what'd you do to develop it?
3. tips/pointers/advice!
* comfortable like, confident, not "lay around watch movies indoors" comfy.

anyways, i think i just started to develop my own style like this year. i stopped wearing what everyone else was wearing or what they wanted me to wear. i wear what i like and what i think it cute, but i doo read lots of trendy fashion magazines for ideas on what to put together. i donno..

The one "style" I really hate right now is nightgown babydoll dresses or whateverthefuck, black tights, heels and loads of black eye makeup, gehhh.
Really all it comes down to is wear what makes YOU feel sexy, womanly and pretty. Doesn't matter if its velour, tulle or cotton, or with sneakers, mary janes or platforms. Give different things a try, you'll figure it out.

but i have lots of fun with my jeans. i got a pair of curvy flare jeans from the Gap last year and they're amazing and look good with everything. shoes are big for me. i like flats with flares, and heels with the greatest skinny jeans ever from H&M.
i'm super big on contrasting colors, too. i don't like matching as much as i love pairing colors that are bold while still going well together.

Look at street fashion sites and bookmark looks you enjoy the most. Choose quality over quantity, and this doesn't mean paying $$$$$ - thrift well-made pieces, not rags.

I do that too. Whenever I buy something and it's in a variety of colours I always go for black because it will match everything. Then I go home and whinge about how boring my clothes are.

but lately i've gotten sick of that and have chosen to wear mostly classic items, mostly from stores like anthropologie, j crew, banana republic, random boutiques in my town. I like interesting cut shirts, usually without a print
i really love the easy pair of striped pants i bought for 13 dollars at urban outfitters four years ago, but i've worn them to death and they're really falling apart. sad face. I have a oddly shaped body...small breasts, large thieghs, big booty, not such a big belly though. so i find shopping at 'older' stores like anthropologie and banana republic to be more flattering.
i love wide leg pants, they flatter my curves best. i hate tight fitting things, i feel self conscious.
so i guess personal style developed through work-wardrobe requirement and then getting sick of that any wanting clothes that flatter more and last longer.

2. i don't know how i developed it. i just realized what i liked and went for it? haha.
3. tips: do exactly what i did above. if you try something and feel like it's not you, DON'T DO IT! no matter how cute it may look, if you aren't comfortable simply don't. if you feel like you look cute, well god dammit i'm sure you really are, so stick with it! also- always buy clothes that flatter your body. that's THE NUMBER ONE rule. it's really not hard, but it's often overlooked i feel. i've even caught myself on this one! :x

2) tossed out everything that didn't suit me. all the overtly bright clothes, patterned things (i HATE t-shirts with stupid sayings and weird prints), ill-fitting pants, things i never wore. threw away everything that was old and ratty. started over new, built up a new wardrobe slowly. (still building!)
3) start with a few classic pieces. a nice pair of pants, good shoes, classic shirts you can wear with anything and go from there!

My style has changed so much over the years. To class, I'm usually ridiculously lazy and just wear a t-shirt. alas! I feel like I buy just whatever i like. I'm a sucker for jeans but I live in skirts, especially miniskirts. I'm loving dresses and I like closed toed shoes and sweaters and anything really flowy and light. Lately, my style has gotten more expensive.
I guess I just wear whatever i want when i wanna and it all sort of works together somehow.
March 20 2007, 00:54:28 UTC 5 years ago
i love skirts too, i can't get enough. only i'm not thin enough to pull off minis without leggings/tights/stockings.

nice shoes, skinny jeans in pretty much any color cuz i'm not comfortable in anything else, cardigans in weird colors like brown and lavender, hoodies, leather jackets (i have two, my black one i got from my dads gf that i adore and the pink one i bought because i wanted to be a pink lady, next step for that one is "pink ladies" written on the back) and sunglasses that have some sort of weird thing on them (my favorites have fake snakeskin on them) and a scarf and a beret when it's cold. yep. and plain shirts that are comfy and x boyfriends band shirts that they cut to be more hardcore that i safety pin to flatter. and my ugly bag that i won't ever stop loving that i got for a dollar.

1. sophmore year of highschool, I just didn't care if I was teased or pushed into lockers anymore. And at the time older guys dug it and that mattered.
2. Let go of what everyone else said was cool. deep down I didn't think it was cool and I was doing whatever I thought was cool in secret.
3. You can definitely use vogue as a guide if you are having trouble what to buy.
Look at the lovely ladies in this community especially [Bad username: venus_bacchus,] and
Remember you can make mistakes, I don't care what others say but you can and it is ok and don't let people make you feel like a reject if you do.
GOOD LUCK ^_^

i'm trying to stop purchasing clothes that will inevitably break down in a few months and saving for things that will last and remain classic. it might be harder for me now, but i know it will be worth it.
March 20 2007, 01:18:58 UTC 5 years ago
you have changed, much much classier.
i pretty much buy clothes under $10 and have a personality to make up for it. being comfortable with your body is also key.

I am also realizing that I really like places like J Crew and Anthropologie, but I'll mix up the pieces with odd accessories like my down-to-my-navel black rosary to keep it from looking precious. Whew, sorry this was long!
But don't think you have "no personal style"--whatever you feel comfortable and confident in is what's best for you.

I like quality. All of my clothes will last me ten years. I don't mind spending $400 on a velvet blazer, if it means that I'll wear it once a week or so for 8 years. And quality tends to look timeless and chic, while cheap tends to look... cheap.
I like dresses and feminine peices. And no, it isn't because of my gender role (this girl at my school accused me because of the way I dressed, to be a "superficial bitch". Little did she know that I'm outspoken on feminism). I like the way dresses look on a woman, and the way they move.
I love fabulous shoes- I spend most of my disposible income on shoes. I don't wear heels to school that often, because it is weird and awkward in high school. But when the outfit calls for heels, I'll do it.
I never wear tee shirts. I hate them. I have a small chest, and I just look like a boy in them. I wear polo shirts when I have to be more casual.
I have all of my jeans tailored perfectly. It isn't that expensive, and it's the best thing you can do for your wardrobe. I mean, most people wear jeans the most out of anything in their wardrobe, right? You should always have the perfect pair.
I typically wear lacy top, blazer, my perfect diesel jeans, and pointy toe flats/heels. I'm also a fan of my riding boots .
My friend Paulina has the best personal style- always fancy flats, muted tights, a knee length skirt, tank top, tee shirt, and cardigan. She buys everything within the same color scheme, wakes up at 7:00, and get to school at 7:10. She's gorgeous.

and because i live in a tropical place it's usually.
tshirts, tanks, shorts, summer dresses and havaianas.
but when i go out at night
i bring out the heels and put on a little make up.
red lips and gold slinky jewelry always finish off any outfit of mine.

Really get to know what suits you and what you can pull off. Wear stuff which looks classy and stylish but is also good quality and suits your figure. That's far better than blindly following every trend for the sake of it.

Today I was art-student-in-france-trying-to-absorb-t
Yesterday I was uni-interview-slash-annie-hall (striped trousers, white shirt, v-neck jumper.)
I see every day as an oppurtunity to dress up and mess around. I'm young and female, the possibilities are endless.

2. I looked at every magazine, fashion book and blog I could get my hands/eyes on. I took notes. the fashion magazines I own are filled with sharpie notes in the margins, pieces of paper with notes scribbled across them stuck between the pages. I save pictures of things I like, and I think about how I would wear them. I look at the collections for each season and try to get a grip on what is going to be trendy, and what is on it's way out. that occasionally impacts my decision, but, I try to wear what I like/feel comfortable in, but I enjoy being aware of what's going on. I have notebooks filled with lists of things I own, things I want to own, things I don't like, my favourite colours, my favourite pieces, my favourite shapes. yes, I am a tad bit obsessive.
3. I think the two best pieces of advice anyone could recieve are the following:
a) figure out what silhouettes work for your shape. while I believe that if you have confidence you can rock almost anything, knowing what works the best for you is a nice thing to fall back on. almost all wardrobe/fashion related books talk about body shape (they usually use pear, hourglass and upside down triangle) and the shapes that are reccomended for each type is usually pretty close to accurate. I have slightly broad shoulders, a large chest, normal waist and hips and long legs and I've found that a highwaisted pencil skirt makes my legs go on forever. I have four or five.
b) figure out what colours work for you. There are books that work, and gala darling explains it pretty well on her site: www.galadarling.com I think you should wear colours you like, but also ones that look good on you. someone wearing the wrong colour often looks horrible, sickly even.
in all honesty; it could be the prettiest dress in the world, but it doesn't flatter you in colour and in shape people will be talking about how pretty the dress is, not how pretty you are.
